Unit 5: Area, Surface Area & Volume Lesson 5-4 6.GR.1

Apply Area Concepts to Solve Problems

Aplicar conceptos de área para resolver problemas

I can find the area of a composite figure by decomposing it into basic shapes, including a regular polygon split into triangles, and adding or subtracting the areas.

Speaking and writing goal: I can explain my steps using the words composite figure, decompose, add, and subtract.

What Your Child Is Learning / Qué está aprendiendo su estudiante

English

Tonight we find the area of a composite figure — a shape made of two or more simple shapes joined together, like an L-shaped room. We break it apart, find each piece, then add or subtract.

Break the figure into simple shapes. Add the areas when the pieces are joined. Subtract when a piece is cut out.

Why This Matters / Por qué es importante

Geometry helps with building, decorating, packing, maps, art, and design. Students use it when they plan space, compare shapes, or figure out how much material a project needs.
Ayuda a planear espacios y calcular materiales.

Example from this lesson / Ejemplo de esta lección

Real example: an L-shaped room breaks into two rectangles. One is 12 feet by 8 feet, the other is 6 feet by 5 feet. We want the total area.

Find the first rectangle: area = length × width = 12 × 8 = 96 square feet.

Halla el primer rectángulo: área = largo × ancho = 12 × 8 = 96 pies cuadrados.

Find the second rectangle: 6 × 5 = 30 square feet.

Halla el segundo rectángulo: 6 × 5 = 30 pies cuadrados.

How You Can Help At Home / Cómo puede ayudar en casa

Ask your student

  • What simple shapes can we break this into?
  • Are the pieces joined, or is one cut out?

Watch for: Listen for "figura compuesta" (composite figure) — a shape made of two or more simple shapes put together.

Key Vocabulary / Vocabulario clave

Area of Composite Figures Área de figuras compuestas

The total space inside a figure made of basic shapes. Formula: A = A₁ + A₂ — add the parts (or subtract a missing piece).

Composite Figure Figura compuesta

A shape made by putting two or more simple shapes together.

Decompose Descomponer

To break a shape into smaller, simpler shapes.

Add Sumar

Add up the areas of the smaller shapes to get the total.

Subtract Restar

Take away the area of a missing piece from a bigger shape.

A math rule written with symbols.

Una regla matemática escrita con símbolos.

Try It Together / Inténtenlo juntos

Imagine a smaller L-shaped room made of a 5 ft by 4 ft rectangle and a 3 ft by 2 ft rectangle joined together.

Let your child explain first, then open a hint.

  1. Find the first rectangle: 5 × 4. What do you get?
    Hallen el primer rectángulo: 5 × 4. ¿Qué obtienen?
    Show hint / Mostrar pista
    5 × 4 = 20 square feet.
    5 × 4 = 20 pies cuadrados.
  2. Find the second rectangle: 3 × 2. What do you get?
    Hallen el segundo rectángulo: 3 × 2. ¿Qué obtienen?
    Show hint / Mostrar pista
    3 × 2 = 6 square feet.
    3 × 2 = 6 pies cuadrados.
  3. Are the two pieces joined or cut out? Combine them — what is the total area?
    Show hint / Mostrar pista
    Joined, so add: 20 + 6 = 26 square feet.
    Unidas, así que sumen: 20 + 6 = 26 pies cuadrados.
