Tonight we use integers — positive and negative whole numbers — to describe real situations, say what 0 means in each one, and name a number's opposite.
Zero is the neutral starting point, and the story tells you what it stands for — sea level, or an account with nothing in it. Amounts above 0 are positive and amounts below 0 are negative. Two opposites sit the same distance from 0 on opposite sides, like 86 and −86.

Real example: Badwater Basin in Death Valley is 86 meters below sea level. How do we write that elevation as an integer?
