It is optional, and the photo stays on this device. Tonight we measure how spread out a data set is, using the range and the interquartile range (IQR).

Real example: 20 history test scores, from a low of 68 to a high of 94.
Range: subtract the least from the greatest.
Rango: resta el menor del mayor.
94 − 68 = 26 points from end to end.
94 − 68 = 26 puntos de extremo a extremo.
The quartiles cut the ordered scores into four equal groups: Q1 = 75.5, median = 83.5, Q3 = 88.
IQR: subtract Q1 from Q3.
RIC: resta Q1 de Q3.
88 − 75.5 = 12.5. The middle half of the class differed by only 12.5 points, even though the full range was 26.
Listen for "interquartile range" (rango intercuartílico) — on a box plot it is simply the width of the box.
Both are differences. IQR cannot be greater than the range; if it is, recheck the ordering, quartiles, and subtraction.
One unusually high value stretches the range a lot but barely moves the IQR — that is exactly why both exist.

Two numbers that describe spread: the range covers all the data, and the interquartile range covers only the middle half.
Rango

Cuartil
Cuartil
One of the three values that cut an ordered data set into four equal-sized groups.

A single number that describes the spread of a whole data set. The range and the IQR are both measures of variation.

Valor extremo
Valor extremo
The least or greatest value in a data set, far from the rest.

Which statement about Class B is true? Why:Por qué: A median describes the center only, so equal medians say nothing about shape. Why:Por qué: A smaller IQR means the middle half of the data is packed into a shorter stretch, so Class B's middle half varies less. What does this tell a player? Why:Por qué: Both measures of variation are smaller for Team B, so its salaries vary less: a typical player is more likely to earn close to the median. Team A spreads much wider in both directions. Why:Por qué: The median and the mean are both 80 (720 ÷ 9 = 80), so the center is about 80. The range is 88 − 72 = 16. The scores sit the same distances below and above 80 (8, 4, 2 below and 2, 4, 8 above), so the shape is roughly symmetric.
