🎯 The big ideaLa idea principal
In one sentence: A mean is a total shared equally, so a target mean is really a target TOTAL. Multiply the mean you want by how many values there will be — that is the total you need. Subtract the total you already have, and what is left is the missing value.
Target for five games: 16 × 5 = 80 points.Meta para cinco partidos: 16 × 5 = 80 puntos.
60 + ? = 80
Check the missing scoreComprueba la puntuación faltante
80 − 60 = 20 · (60 + 20) ÷ 5 = 16
A target mean of 16 over five games needs 80 total points. Subtract the 60 already scored to find the missing 20.Una media objetivo de 16 en cinco partidos necesita 80 puntos en total.

Real example: a player scored 12, 18, 14, and 16 points in four games.

🧩ModelModelaStep 2Paso 2
Turn the target mean into a target total: 16 points × 5 games = 80 points needed in all.
3
✏️SolveResuelveStep 3Paso 3
Add the points she already has: 12 + 18 + 14 + 16 = 60 points.
Suma los puntos que ya tiene: 12 + 18 + 14 + 16 = 60 puntos.

✅CheckRevisaStep 4Paso 4
Subtract: 80 − 60 = 20.
Resta: 80 − 60 = 20.

She needs 20 points in the fifth game to reach a mean of 16.

Count carefully. Five games, not four — the new value counts too when you multiply.

✅ What to sayQué decir
If the mean is a fair share, what would the total have to be?
How many values will there be when we are done — including the new one?
Put your answer back in. Does the mean come out right?
Pon tu respuesta de vuelta. ¿Sale bien la media?
🚫 What NOT to sayQué evitar
Just take the average of the scores he already has.
Multiply by the number of tests he has taken so far.
The missing score has to be close to the target, so guess.

🎯 The Big IdeaLa idea principal
In one sentence:En una frase: A mean is a total shared equally, so a target mean is really a target TOTAL. Multiply the mean you want by how many values there will be — that is the total you need. Subtract the total you already have, and what is left is the missing value.
Ask your student — let them explain the thinking:Pregunta a tu estudiante — deja que explique su razonamiento:
👀 Listen for "target total" — the mean you want multiplied by the number of values.
🔢 Count carefully. Five games, not four — the new value counts too when you multiply.
✋ Have your student check the answer by putting it back in and finding the mean of all five.

20
16 × 5 = 80 target total; 12 + 18 + 14 + 16 = 60 so far; 80 − 60 = 20 points needed. 60 and 80 are totals, not a game score, and 16 would leave her mean at 15.2.16 × 5 = 80 de total meta; 12 + 18 + 14 + 16 = 60 hasta ahora; 80 − 60 = 20 puntos necesarios.
Warm-up 2Calentamiento 2
No — his total so far is 396 and he needs 560, so he needs 164.No — su total hasta ahora es 396 y necesita 560, así que necesita 164.
He needs 560 − 396 = 164 — well above 140, because his first three games were below the target and the fourth has to make up the gap. 132 is his current mean and 560 is the total for all four games, not a single score.
Warm-up 3Calentamiento 3
97
Target total: 90 × 4 = 360. Current total: 85 + 90 + 88 = 263. She needs 360 − 263 = 97. Scoring 90 would leave the mean below 90; 87.7 is her current mean; 263 is the total so far.Total meta: 90 × 4 = 360. Total actual: 85 + 90 + 88 = 263. Necesita 360 − 263 = 97.
Level up 1Sube de nivel 1
A mean of 50 over 5 days is a total of 50 × 5 = 250 pages, because the mean is the total shared equally across the days. She has read 30 + 45 + 60 = 135 pages. The missing amount is 250 − 135 = 115 pages over the last two days — a subtraction because the target total already includes the pages she has, so only the difference is still needed.
Level up 2Sube de nivel 2
89
86 × 4 = 344; 78 + 85 + 92 = 255; 344 − 255 = 89. Check: (78 + 85 + 92 + 89) ÷ 4 = 86. Scoring 86 gives a mean of 85, 85 is the current mean, and 344 is the target total.86 × 4 = 344; 78 + 85 + 92 = 255; 344 − 255 = 89. Comprueba: (78 + 85 + 92 + 89) ÷ 4 = 86.
Level up 3Sube de nivel 3
13
The four numbers must total 12 × 4 = 48; the three known ones total 35, so the fourth is 48 − 35 = 13. The fourth number is not simply the mean; 35 is the partial total and 48 is the target total.
