Tonight we estimate a percent of a number by rounding to friendly values first — and then we explain whether the estimate runs a bit high or a bit low.

Round the percent: 18.5% is close to 20%.
Redondea el porcentaje: 18.5% está cerca de 20%.
Round the amount: 412 is close to 400.
Redondea la cantidad: 412 está cerca de 400.
Find 10% first: 10% of 400 is 40.
Halla el 10% primero: 10% de 400 es 40.
Double to get 20%: 40 × 2 = 80 cans.
Duplica para obtener 20%: 40 × 2 = 80 latas.
Track rounding: percent rounded up and total rounded down, so 80 cans runs slightly high.

Animators at Pixar use equivalent ratios to scale characters across 4K movie screens, tablets, and phones without distorting their proportions. If Woody's hat is 1:4 of his height, it stays 1:4 on any screen size!

Why:Por qué: Round 21% to 20% and $39 to $40. 10% of $40 is $4, and 20% is double: $4 × 2 = $8. About $32 is the estimated SALE PRICE after the discount ($40 − $8), which answers a different question than the one asked.Redondea 21% a 20% y $39 a $40.

Why:Por qué: 48% ≈ 50% and 62 ≈ 60, so the estimate is half of 60 = about 30 (the exact answer, 29.76, is close). 3 uses 5% instead of 50%; 110 adds; 60 forgets to take a percent at all.48% ≈ 50% y 62 ≈ 60, así que la estimación es la mitad de 60 = cerca de 30 (la respuesta exacta, 29.76, está cerca). 3 usa 5% en vez de 50%; 110 suma; 60 olvida tomar un porcentaje.

Why:Por qué: 10% of 40 is 4, and 20% is double that: 4 × 2 = 8. Stopping after finding the 10% piece (4) forgets to double it for 20% — and reporting the rounded number itself (40) forgets to find the percent of it at all.El 10% de 40 es 4, y el 20% es el doble de eso: 4 × 2 = 8. Sample answer:Respuesta de ejemplo: Round 24% to the nearby benchmark 25%, and round 243 to the friendly number 240 (240 ÷ 4 = 60 exactly). Twenty-five percent of 240 is 60, so about 60 tickets were student tickets. This is an estimate, not the exact count, because both the percent and the ticket total were rounded before computing — the true answer (24% of 243 = 58.32) is close to 60 but not identical.

Estimate 32% of 89 by rounding to 30% of 90.Estima el 32% de 89 redondeando a 30% de 90.

Not tried yet? Close this and give it one try first. A wrong first try still helps.¿Todavía no lo intentaron? Ciérrenla y hagan un intento primero. Un primer intento equivocado también ayuda.
Why:Por qué: 10% of 90 is 9, and 30% is three of those: 9 × 3 = 27. Stopping after the 10% piece (9) forgets to triple it, and dividing 90 by 30 (treating 'percent of' as division) gives a completely different, wrong operation.

Why:Por qué: 10% of $60 is $6, so 20% is $12. $6 stops at 10%; $1.20 misplaces the decimal (2%); $30 is 50%.El 10% de $60 es $6, así que el 20% es $12. $6 se detiene en 10%; $1.20 coloca mal el decimal (2%); $30 es 50%.
