📖 What we're learning tonightQué aprendemos hoy

English

Tonight we work backwards: when we know a part and the percent that part represents, we find the whole amount it came from.

Key words
  • Determine the Whole Given the Part and Percent
  • Part
  • Whole
  • Double number line
  • Equation

  • Parte
  • Total
  • Recta numérica doble
  • Ecuación

In one sentence: Percent × whole = part. When the whole is missing, divide the part by the percent written as a decimal.

  1. StartEmpiezaStep 1Paso 1

Real example: a sweater's sale price is $42, which is 60% of the original price.

    More detailMás detalle

    What was the original price?

    ¿Cuál era el precio original?

  2. Show itMuéstraloStep 2Paso 2

Name the pieces: $42 is the part, 60% is the percent, and the original price is the missing whole (100%).

  3. SolveResuelveStep 3Paso 3

    Write 60% as a decimal, 0.6, and set up the equation: 0.6 × v = 42.

    Escribe 60 % como decimal, 0.6, y plantea la ecuación: 0.6 × v = 42.

  4. CheckRevisaStep 4Paso 4

    Divide to undo the multiplication: 42 ÷ 0.6 = 70.

    Divide para deshacer la multiplicación: 42 ÷ 0.6 = 70.

    More detailMás detalle

The original price was $70 — larger than the sale price, as a discount requires.

  • 👀

Listen for "the whole" (el total) — it is always the 100% amount, and it is what is missing tonight.

  • 🔢

Divide, do not multiply. Multiplying by 0.6 makes the answer smaller than the part, which is impossible.

Divide, no multipliques.

  • Check the size: if the percent is under 100%, the whole must be bigger than the part.
