📖 What we're learning tonightQué aprendemos hoy

English

Tonight we write a percent equation — part = percent × whole — and solve it for the unknown whole by dividing.

Key words
  • Determine the Whole Given the Part and Percent
  • Part
  • Whole

  • Parte
  • Total

For the grown-up helping tonightPara el adulto que ayuda hoy

  • If they get stuck, ask:Si se atora, pregunten: Which amount is 100%? Are we finding the part, percent, or whole?¿Qué cantidad es el 100%?
  • Try not to say:Eviten decir: Multiply the part by the percent to find the whole.

🎯 The big ideaLa idea principal

In one sentence: Percent times whole equals part. So when the WHOLE is what you are missing, division undoes the multiplication: whole = part ÷ percent. If the percent is less than 100%, the whole must come out BIGGER than the part — a smaller answer is the tell that you multiplied.

Solve for the Whole with an EquationHalla el entero con una ecuación EQUATION: PERCENT × WHOLE = PART Problem: A $6 tip is 15% of the total restaurant bill (b). 1. Write the equation: 0.15 × b = 6 2. Divide to undo multiplication: b = 6 ÷ 0.15 3. Calculate the missing whole: b = $40 total bill ✔ CHECK YOUR WORK (INVERSE OPERATION): Multiply back: 15% of $40 = 0.15 × 40 = $6. ✓ Matches the tip! Sanity check: 15% is less than 100%, so the whole MUST exceed the part ($40 > $6). Multiplying by 0.15 would give $0.90 — an obvious red flag for a total bill!
Percent times whole equals part. Divide both sides by the decimal percent to isolate the whole.
  1. Set up equationPlantea la ecuaciónStep 1Paso 1

Real example: a $6 tip is 15% of the total bill.

    More detailMás detalle

Write the equation with a letter for the unknown whole: 0.15 × b = 6.

  2. Divide to isolateDivide para despejarStep 2Paso 2

    Division undoes multiplication, so divide both sides by 0.15: b = 6 ÷ 0.15.

  3. Calculate the wholeCalcula el totalStep 3Paso 3

    Compute the quotient: 6 ÷ 0.15 = 40.

    Calcula el cociente: 6 ÷ 0.15 = 40.

    More detailMás detalle

The original total bill was $40.

La cuenta total original era de $40.

  4. Multiply to verifyMultiplica para verificarStep 4Paso 4

    Check by multiplying back: 15% of $40 is 0.15 × 40 = $6.

    Comprueba multiplicando de regreso: el 15 % de $40 es 0.15 × 40 = $6.

    More detailMás detalle

✓ The whole $40 is confirmed.

✓ El total de $40 queda confirmado.

Watch for these (3)Ten en cuenta (3)
  • 👀

Listen for "inverse operation" (operación inversa) — division undoes multiplying, which is why it solves for the whole.

  • 🚩

If the whole comes out SMALLER than the part, something went wrong. For "$42 is 60% of the price", $25.20 is impossible.

  • ✋

Always check by finding that percent of your answer. It should give back the part.

Six beads are 25% of a bag. One shaded box is the known part; all four boxes are the unknown whole, w. Write 0.25w = 6. Escribe 0.25w = 6. ¿Qué operación deshace la multiplicación por 0.25?

Known part: 25% = 6 beads. Whole: 100% = w beads.Parte conocida: 25% = 6 cuentas. Total: 100% = w cuentas.

Check the equation and solutionComprueba la ecuación y la solución

0.25w = 6 → w = 6 ÷ 0.25 = 24
0.25 × 24 = 6

WHY THIS MATTERS¿POR QUÉ IMPORTA?

Pixar Animation & Video Game Scaling Animación de Pixar y gráficos de videojuegos

Animators at Pixar use equivalent ratios to scale characters across 4K movie screens, tablets, and phones without distorting their proportions. If Woody's hat is 1:4 of his height, it stays 1:4 on any screen size!

Treating the percent as an amount of money — reading 25% off $40 as $25 off.

💬 Parent Coach Question:Pregunta de guía: Ask: '25% of WHAT? A percent is always a part of some amount — which amount is it a part of here?'
