Tonight we find the area of a triangle. A triangle is a shape with three sides. We use the rule: area = ½ × base × height.

Real example: a triangular garden has a base of 12 feet and a height of 8 feet.
We want its area in square feet.
Queremos su área en pies cuadrados.
Write the rule: area = ½ × base × height.
Escribe la regla: área = ½ × base × altura.
Multiply base × height first: 12 × 8 = 96.
Multiplica base × altura primero: 12 × 8 = 96.
Take half: ½ × 96 = 48.
Toma la mitad: ½ × 96 = 48.
So the area is 48 square feet. The triangle is half of a 12 × 8 rectangle.
Listen for "altura" (height) — it is the straight-up distance from the base to the top corner, making a square corner. It is NOT the slanted side.

Why:Por qué: Each wall appears twice — once with the ½ applied and once without. 18 × 6 = 108, so the correct area is 54 sq ft; 20 × 5 = 100, so the correct area is 50 sq ft; 14 × 8 = 112, so the correct area is 56 sq ft. Why:Por qué: The rectangle's area is 12 × 8 = 96 sq ft, and one diagonal cuts it into two identical triangles, so each triangle is 96 ÷ 2 = 48 sq ft. The formula says the same thing: each triangle keeps the rectangle's base of 12 and height of 8, and A = ½ × 12 × 8 = 48 sq ft. The ½ in the triangle formula IS that diagonal cut.

Start here: A triangle covers exactly half of the rectangle that has the same base and the same height.
A triangular window in the firm's lobby has a base of 10 ft and a height of 6 ft. What is its area?

Why:Por qué: A = ½ × base × height = ½ × 10 × 6 = ½ × 60 = 30 sq ft. The triangle is half of the 10 × 6 = 60 rectangle it fits inside.A = ½ × base × altura = ½ × 10 × 6 = ½ × 60 = 30 sq ft.

Multiply the base by the height first, then cut that result in half.
Start here: The area of a triangle is A = ½ × base × height, and the ½ is there because a triangle is half of a rectangle.
A triangular roof panel on the blueprint has a base of 7 ft and a height of 4 ft. What is its area?

Why:Por qué: A = ½ × base × height = ½ × 7 × 4 = ½ × 28 = 14 sq ft. Multiply base × height first (28), then take half (14).A = ½ × base × altura = ½ × 7 × 4 = ½ × 28 = 14 sq ft. Multiplica primero base × altura (28) y después toma la mitad (14).

With an odd base, it is easier to multiply base × height first and take half at the end.
Start here: Every triangle's area comes from A = ½ × base × height.
On the blueprint, a triangular garden bed has a base of 11 ft and a height of 6 ft. What is its area?

Missing area: ½ × b × h. Missing base or height: double the area first, then divide by the measurement you know.
Start here: Gardens A and D are missing area; Gardens B and C are missing a base or height — those need backwards steps.

Why:Por qué: Two rows run forward and two run backward. Garden A: ½ × 12 × 8 = 48 sq ft, and Garden D: ½ × 15 × 4 = 30 sq ft. When the base or height is missing, double the area first: Garden B, 27 × 2 = 54, then 54 ÷ 9 = 6 ft of height; Garden C, 35 × 2 = 70, then 70 ÷ 10 = 7 ft of base.Dos filas van hacia adelante y dos van hacia atrás. Garden A: ½ × 12 × 8 = 48 sq ft, y Garden D: ½ × 15 × 4 = 30 sq ft. Cuando falta la base o la altura, primero duplica el área: Garden B, 27 × 2 = 54, y luego 54 ÷ 9 = 6 ft de altura; Garden C, 35 × 2 = 70, y luego 70 ÷ 10 = 7 ft de base.
