📖 What we're learning tonightQué aprendemos hoy

English

Tonight we write integers for real situations — gains and losses, above and below — and say what ZERO means in each one.

Key words
  • Integer
  • Opposite
  • Negative number

  • Opuesto
  • Número negativo

  • If they get stuck, ask:Si se atora, pregunten: Where is the number relative to zero? What does its sign tell you?¿Dónde está el número con respecto a cero? ¿Qué indica su signo?
  • Try not to say:Eviten decir: The opposite of a negative is still negative.

🎯 The big ideaLa idea principal

In one sentence: A negative sign is direction, not size. Positive means a gain, above, or up; negative means a loss, below, or down; and zero is the neutral starting point — sea level, breaking even, the line of scrimmage. Taking the opposite flips the side but never changes the distance from 0.

Number LineRecta numérica |−3| = 3 −5−4−3−2−1012345 3 units from 0 Left of 0 = negative · Right of 0 = positive
Absolute value is only the DISTANCE from zero, so it is never negative.
  1. Set upPlanteaStep 1Paso 1

Real example: a freezer gauge read −33 degrees.

    More detailMás detalle

It changed to the opposite of that reading, then to the opposite again.

  2. ModelModelaStep 2Paso 2

Start at −33, which sits 33 units to the LEFT of 0.

  3. SolveResuelveStep 3Paso 3

Take the opposite — same distance, other side of 0: the second reading is 33.

  4. CheckRevisaStep 4Paso 4

Take the opposite again and you flip back across 0 to −33.

    More detailMás detalle

Two flips land you on the number you started with.

  • 👀

Listen for "opposite" (opuesto) — same distance from 0, other side of 0. The opposite of −7 is 7.

Escucha "opuesto" — misma distancia del 0, del otro lado del 0. El opuesto de −7 es 7.

  • ↔️

The opposite of a negative is POSITIVE. Saying the opposite of −7 is −7 is the most common error tonight.

  • ✋

Ask what zero means in each story. Sea level? No money gained or lost? Starting position? It changes every time.

Move the point. Notice its distance from zero and which side of zero it is on.Mueve el punto.

1

Touch and changeToca y cambia

Move, type, tap, or drag in the model. Watch what changes.

WHY THIS MATTERS¿POR QUÉ IMPORTA?

Deep Sea Oceanography & Elevation Oceanografía marina y elevación

Submarines diving in the Mariana Trench use negative numbers on vertical number lines: −11,000 meters means 11,000 meters below sea level (0)! Mount Everest sits at +8,848 meters.

Thinking −8 is greater than −2 because 8 is bigger than 2.

💬 Parent Coach Question:Pregunta de guía: Ask: 'Which temperature is colder: −8° or −2°? Which number sits farther left on the number line?' Pregunta: '¿Qué temperatura es más fría: −8° o −2°? ¿Cuál número está más a la izquierda?'
