Tonight we write inequalities. An inequality compares two amounts with the signs <, >, ≤, or ≥, when many values are allowed instead of just one.

Real clue: 'The suspect is at least 18 years old.' We let a stand for the age.
Think about what the phrase allows.
Piensa en lo que permite la frase.
'At least 18' means 18 is allowed AND any number bigger.
Choose the symbol.
Elige el símbolo.
Because 18 itself is included, we use ≥ (greater than or equal to).
Write it: a ≥ 18.
Escríbelo: a ≥ 18.
So a could be 18, 19, 20, and up — not just one number.
Así que a podría ser 18, 19, 20 y más — no solo un número.
Listen for "inequality" (desigualdad) — a sentence that compares with <, >, ≤, or ≥, not a single answer.
Listen for "at least / at most" (al menos / a lo más) — these include the number (≥ or ≤).
Ask "Is that exact number allowed, yes or no?" The answer decides between > / < and ≥ / ≤.

Why:Por qué: Each clue names a boundary and also says whether that boundary is included. "More than 70 mph" and "more than 6 fingerprints" shut their numbers out (>), "under 3 minutes" and "fewer than 9 cars" stay below theirs (<), "at least 30 dollars" and "no fewer than 4 witnesses" include theirs going up (≥), and "at most 14 footprints" and "no more than 7 keys" include theirs going down (≤).Cada pista nombra un límite y también dice si ese límite se incluye.

Why:Por qué: Each phrase maps to one symbol, and the "or equal to" bar appears whenever the boundary number itself is allowed: "at least" is ≥, while "at most" and "no more than" are both ≤ because each one caps the amount.

Why:Por qué: Every row uses the same three moves: find the key phrase, swap it for a symbol, then attach the variable and the number. "Less than" is strict, so the package row is w < 50, while "at least" and "no more than" both include their boundary, giving m ≥ 25 and s ≤ 30.Cada fila usa los mismos tres pasos: encuentra la frase clave, cámbiala por un símbolo y luego une la variable con el número. 'Exactly' points to one value, so an equation fits. 'More than' and 'at most' allow many values, so an inequality symbol is needed.

Why:Por qué: An equation pins down one exact value while an inequality covers a whole range of them. "Exactly 12 cases" can only be 12, so it is c = 12; "more than 12" allows 13, 14, and beyond, so it is c > 12; and "at most 12" allows 12 plus everything below it, so it is c ≤ 12.Una ecuación fija un solo valor exacto, mientras que una desigualdad abarca todo un rango de valores. "Exactamente 12 casos" solo puede ser 12, así que es c = 12; "más de 12" permite 13, 14 y más, así que es c > 12; y "a lo más 12" permite 12 y todo lo que esté por debajo, así que es c ≤ 12.

Why:Por qué: The only difference between > and ≥ is whether the boundary number itself is allowed. A rule like "score more than 10 points to win" leaves 10 out, so it needs >, while "you must be at least 13 to watch" lets exactly 13 count, so it needs ≥. Testing the boundary number in your own situation is the quickest way to check which symbol fits. Why:Por qué: Substituting 10 for x tests each inequality: 10 ≥ 10, 10 ≤ 15, and 10 > 8 are all true, so 10 is a solution to those three. But 10 > 10, 10 < 10, and 10 ≤ 5 are false, which shows that a strict symbol shuts the boundary value out while ≥ and ≤ let it in.Sustituir x por 10 pone a prueba cada desigualdad: 10 ≥ 10, 10 ≤ 15 y 10 > 8 son verdaderas, así que 10 es solución de esas tres.

'At least 12' means 12 itself is allowed, so the symbol needs an 'or equal to' part.
Start here: An inequality has two things to decide: which direction it points, and whether the boundary number is included.
A clue says the suspect carried at least 12 stolen gems. Which inequality shows the number g of gems?

Why:Por qué: 'At least 12' includes 12 and any number above it, so g ≥ 12.'Al menos 12' incluye el 12 y cualquier número mayor, así que g ≥ 12.
