Tonight we solve an inequality and then graph it. We get the letter alone the same way as an equation, but the answer is a range of values.

Real example: solve and graph x + 3 > 53 (the suspect withdrew more than $50, plus a $3 fee).
Use the inverse operation.
Usa la operación inversa.
The opposite of adding 3 is subtracting 3: x + 3 − 3 > 53 − 3, so x > 50.
Lo opuesto de sumar 3 es restar 3: x + 3 − 3 > 53 − 3, así que x > 50.
Graph it.

The symbol > does not include 50, so draw an open circle at 50 and shade right.
Check by substituting a value: x = 60 gives 60 + 3 = 63, and 63 > 53 is true.
Comprueba sustituyendo un valor: x = 60 da 60 + 3 = 63, y 63 > 53 es verdadero.

Why:Por qué: Each row undoes the operation attached to x, and the symbol keeps its direction when you add or subtract. x + 11 ≥ 20 needs subtract 11, giving x ≥ 9 with a closed circle at 9 shaded right; x − 3 < 7 needs add 3, giving x < 10 with an open circle at 10 shaded left; x + 8 ≤ 20 needs subtract 8, giving x ≤ 12 with a closed circle at 12 shaded left. The ≥ and ≤ rows close their circles because the boundary value is itself a solution.

Why:Por qué: Reverse both the order and the comparison symbol: x > 10 is 10 < x; x ≤ 6 is 6 ≥ x; x ≥ 8 is 8 ≤ x; x < 5 is 5 > x. A number can satisfy more than one inequality, but only one option here has exactly the same solution set as each term.Invierte el orden y el símbolo de comparación: x > 10 equivale a 10 < x; x ≤ 6 a 6 ≥ x; x ≥ 8 a 8 ≤ x; x < 5 a 5 > x. Why:Por qué: Solve first, then test 10. x + 2 > 8 gives x > 6, x − 5 ≥ 3 gives x ≥ 8, and x + 1 ≤ 15 gives x ≤ 14, and 10 satisfies all three. But x + 3 > 15 gives x > 12, x − 2 ≥ 9 gives x ≥ 11, and x + 6 < 10 gives x < 4, and 10 fails every one of those.Primero resuelve y luego prueba con 10. x + 2 > 8 da x > 6, x − 5 ≥ 3 da x ≥ 8 y x + 1 ≤ 15 da x ≤ 14, y el 10 cumple las tres. Why:Por qué: A badge number is a solution of x ≥ 4 when substituting it makes the statement true. 9 ≥ 4 and 5 ≥ 4 are true, and 4 ≥ 4 is also true because ≥ allows equality — that is why the boundary value 4 opens the vault. 3, 2, and 0 are all less than 4, so those statements are false.

Why:Por qué: Solving x + 8 > 15 gives x > 7, and solving x − 6 ≤ 10 gives x ≤ 16. The tests confirm both solution sets: 5 + 8 = 13 is not greater than 15 so 5 fails the first, while 20 + 8 = 28 passes; and 5 − 6 = −1 is at most 10 so 5 passes the second, while 20 − 6 = 14 is greater than 10 and fails.Resolver x + 8 > 15 da x > 7, y resolver x − 6 ≤ 10 da x ≤ 16.

Why:Por qué: "At most $100" puts a cap on the total, so the model is 37 + r ≤ 100. Subtracting 37 from both sides gives r ≤ 63. Because "at most" allows the boundary itself, the graph is a closed circle at 63 shaded to the left, and amounts such as $63, $40, and $10 are all possible values of r."Como máximo $100" pone un tope al total, así que el modelo es 37 + r ≤ 100. Al restar 37 en ambos lados: r ≤ 63. Why:Por qué: A solution makes x > 7 true. Substitute each: 9 > 7 is true, but 7 > 7, 5 > 7, and 3 > 7 are all false. So 9 is the solution that opens the gate.

Subtract 6 from both sides — the inequality symbol keeps pointing the same way when you subtract.
Start here: Solve it like an equation: x has 6 added to it. The > symbol just rides along.
Solve: x + 6 > 14Resuelve: x + 6 > 14

Add 9 to both sides. Adding the same number to both sides never flips the symbol.
Suma 9 a ambos lados. Sumar el mismo número a ambos lados nunca voltea el símbolo.
Start here: x has 9 subtracted from it. Undo that first; the ≤ symbol keeps its direction.
Solve: x − 9 ≤ 3Resuelve: x − 9 ≤ 3

Subtract 10 from both sides; the ≥ stays exactly as it is.
Start here: What's being done to x? 10 is added. Plan the inverse operation before you look at the choices.
Solve: x + 10 ≥ 25Resuelve: x + 10 ≥ 25

Add 4 to both sides — the < direction does not change when you add.
Start here: x has 4 taken away. Which operation puts that 4 back?
