📖 What we're learning tonightQué aprendemos hoy

English

Tonight we find opposites of fractions and decimals — not just whole numbers — and locate both on a number line.

Key words
  • Rational Numbers on the Number Line
  • Rational number
  • Fraction

For the grown-up helping tonightPara el adulto que ayuda hoy

  • If they get stuck, ask:Si se atora, pregunten: Where is the number relative to zero? What does its sign tell you?¿Dónde está el número con respecto a cero? ¿Qué indica su signo?
  • Try not to say:Eviten decir: For −3/4, go to −3 and then count 4 more.Para −3/4, ve a −3 y luego cuenta 4 más.

🎯 The big ideaLa idea principal

In one sentence: Opposites work exactly the same for fractions and decimals as for whole numbers: same distance from 0, other side. The opposite of 3/4 is −3/4, and the opposite of −5.6 is 5.6. And the opposite of the opposite always returns the original number.

Number LineRecta numérica |−3| = 3 −5−4−3−2−1012345 3 units from 0 Left of 0 = negative · Right of 0 = positive
Absolute value is only the DISTANCE from zero, so it is never negative.
  1. Set upPlanteaStep 1Paso 1

Real example: what number is the opposite of the opposite of −6.35?

  2. ModelModelaStep 2Paso 2

Locate the starting number: −6.35 sits 6.35 units to the left of 0, between −6 and −7.

  3. SolveResuelveStep 3Paso 3

First opposite: same distance, other side of 0 — that is 6.35.

  4. CheckRevisaStep 4Paso 4

Second opposite: flip back across 0 to −6.35.

Segundo opuesto: cruza de vuelta el 0 hasta −6.35.

The two flips undo each other.

Los dos giros se deshacen entre sí.

Watch for these (3)Ten en cuenta (3)
  • 👀

Listen for "rational number" (número racional) — any number you can write as a fraction, including decimals and negatives.

  • 📍

−3/4 is between 0 and −1, not at −7. Its numerator and denominator are ONE value, not two separate jumps.

  • ✋

Have your student find the two whole numbers the value falls between, then split that space into equal parts.

Move the point. Use its position to describe or compare the numbers.

1

Touch and changeToca y cambia

Move, type, tap, or drag in the model. Watch what changes.

2

Write the mathEscribe las matemáticas

Record one equation, value, or relationship you can see.

3

Explain the modelExplica el modelo

I notice ___ changes when ___ changes. This shows ___.Noto que ___ cambia cuando ___ cambia. Esto muestra ___.

WHY THIS MATTERS¿POR QUÉ IMPORTA?

Deep Sea Oceanography & Elevation Oceanografía marina y elevación

Submarines diving in the Mariana Trench use negative numbers on vertical number lines: −11,000 meters means 11,000 meters below sea level (0)! Mount Everest sits at +8,848 meters.

Thinking −8 is greater than −2 because 8 is bigger than 2.

💬 Parent Coach Question:Pregunta de guía: Ask: 'Which temperature is colder: −8° or −2°? Which number sits farther left on the number line?' Pregunta: '¿Qué temperatura es más fría: −8° o −2°? ¿Cuál número está más a la izquierda?'
