📖 What we're learning tonightQué aprendemos hoy

English

Tonight we take the long-division steps from Part 1 and use them on a real staffing problem — how many teachers a district has to hire.

Key words
  • Algorithm
  • Dividend
  • Divisor

  • Algoritmo
  • Dividendo
  • Divisor

  • If they get stuck, ask:Si se atora, pregunten: What estimate can you use to check the size and decimal place of your answer?¿Qué estimación puedes usar para comprobar el tamaño y la posición decimal de tu respuesta?
  • Try not to say:Eviten decir: If it will not divide, just skip that digit.

🎯 The big ideaLa idea principal

In one sentence: A word problem may need division more than once. Do one division at a time, write down what each quotient MEANS before starting the next, and keep every place value in line — a missing zero in the quotient makes the answer ten times too small.

Long Division: D · M · S · B 12 1,344 112 Repeat D-M-S-B until no digits are left. 1. Divide 13 ÷ 12 = 1 2. Multiply 1 × 12 = 12 3. Subtract 13 − 12 = 1 4. Bring down bring down the 4
Four moves, in the same order, every single time: Divide, Multiply, Subtract, Bring down.
  1. Set upPlanteaStep 1Paso 1

Real example: a district has 621,000 students with 1 teacher for every 20 students.

How many teachers does it have now?

    ¿Cuántos maestros tiene ahora?

  2. ModelModelaStep 2Paso 2

    Divide: 621,000 ÷ 20 = 31,050 teachers.

    Divide: 621,000 ÷ 20 = 31,050 maestros.

    More detailMás detalle

Say what that number means before moving on.

  3. SolveResuelveStep 3Paso 3

The goal is 1 teacher for every 15 students.

La meta es 1 maestro por cada 15 estudiantes.

    More detailMás detalle

    Divide again: 621,000 ÷ 15 = 41,400 teachers needed.

    Divide otra vez: 621,000 ÷ 15 = 41,400 maestros necesarios.

  4. CheckRevisaStep 4Paso 4

The question asks how many MORE to hire, so subtract: 41,400 − 31,050 = 10,350 new teachers.

La pregunta es cuántos MÁS contratar, así que resta: 41,400 − 31,050 = 10,350 maestros nuevos.

Watch for these (3)Ten en cuenta (3)
  • 👀

Listen for "quotient" (cociente) — the answer to a division, and here it is a number of teachers.

  • 0️⃣

Watch for a missing placeholder zero. If a digit "doesn't divide", a 0 goes in the quotient before bringing the next digit down.

  • ✋

Ask your student to say what each quotient counts — students? teachers? — before doing the next step.

¿maestros? — antes del siguiente paso.
